The original face of women’s MMA is considering making a
comeback to the sport that she help pioneer. Gina Carano confirmed in a recent interview on the Arsenio Hall Show that she has a planned meeting later this
week with UFC president Dana White to discuss a possible return to the cage.
Carano went on to say in the interview with Arsenio that now is the time to
make the return if not then she would retire and walk away from the sport and
“never do it again”.
After an impressive record of 12-1-1 as a professional muay
thai fighter Carano made her MMA debut in 2006 and went on to win her first
seven bouts over veterans and fellow pioneers Kaitlin Young, Rosi Sexton, and
Julie Kedzie before being stopped by Cristine “Cyborg” Justino their title
fight in August 2009. Carnao hasn’t fought since then and has since made the
transition to the Silver Screen in starring roles in films such as Haywire, Fast and Furious 6, and In TheBlood.
The title fight with Justino was the first MMA card that was
headlined by two females for the now defunct Strikeforce brand. After the UFC
purchased Stikeforce they absorbed some of the existing contracts including
Caranos’.
It is unclear weather Carano who normally fights at 145lbs plans on
making the drop to 135lbs for a potential championship superfight with current
UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey. A Carano-Rousey matchup has the
potential to be one of the biggest fights in MMA history.
